Focusing on Teaching Quality, Advancing Collaborative Improvement — Joint Medical School Hosts Faculty Teaching Seminar

May 26 , 2025

At noon on May 21, the Joint Medical School of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and King’s College London (referred to as the “Joint Medical School”) successfully held a faculty teaching seminar at the Learning Lounge of Lynn Library. The meeting was co-chaired by Professor Thérèse Hesketh, Executive Dean of the Joint Medical School, and Professor Zhang Jian, Vice Dean. Attendees included program leads, the academic affairs team, course module coordinators, and representatives of the English teaching team. The group engaged in in-depth discussions on the implementation of teaching standards, current challenges in teaching practice, and future paths for collaboration.

The meeting began by clarifying the academic and administrative requirements of the Joint Medical School, the unique characteristics of course evaluation, and the integrated teaching standards of SUSTech and King’s College London. Professor Hesketh gave a detailed overview of the Exam Board system, resit arrangements, the role of external examiners, and mechanisms for teaching quality assurance. She emphasized the importance of course leads participating in the Exam Board, which, although adding to their workload, plays a crucial role in ensuring the educational quality and academic consistency of the joint program.

During the teaching practice discussion, faculty members shared current challenges related to language learning and resource sharing. The English teaching team introduced the structure of language support courses, IELTS requirements, and relevant support strategies. Participants actively proposed strengthening the development and sharing of multimodal teaching resources—such as videos, glossaries, and post-class quizzes—and exploring new models for involving students in co-developing course materials.

The meeting concluded with a consensus on several collaborative teaching initiatives and resource-sharing strategies for the future. These include enhancing vertical alignment between professional and language courses, optimizing course pacing and assessment difficulty, and organizing training for teaching staff on platforms like Blackboard. The school will also establish a regular communication mechanism for faculty to ensure timely teaching feedback and better support for students’ academic progress.

This seminar was not only a platform for sharing experiences but also a reflective and forward-looking dialogue combining institutional frameworks with educational philosophy. The Joint Medical School will continue advancing teaching quality and refining its systems, working hand in hand with faculty to build a high-quality biomedical talent development program.
