Biomedical Engineering

The Biomedical Engineering Programme aims to train top-notch biomedical engineers to have a solid understanding of the intersection between medicine and industry, with a strong emphasis on research, practical application and innovation. The focus is on emerging medical engineering technologies and their future development. The programme draws on the complementary strengths of SUSTech and King’s.  Students are trained to apply knowledge and technology of engineering, physics, maths and computer sciences to solve problems in the fields of biology and medicine, including the development of biomedical instruments and medical devices. The international teaching and research team has particular strengths in biomedical imaging, biomedical materials and intelligent medical engineering.

Key Benefits

  • Opportunity to obtain two degree-awards in Biomedical Engineering.

  • Designed to prepare students to enter jobs in the evolving field of biomedical engineering, healthcare research or further study in medicine.

  • King's is recognised as one of the international leaders in Biomedical Engineering.

  • Teaching by academic and clinical researchers at the forefront of their field.

  • Contemporary approach to teaching and learning, including innovative programme design and the development of  skills to enhance employability.

  • Strong links with local industries, providing opportunities for summer internships.

Teaching and Assessment

  •  The programme curriculum combines academic modules from both SUSTech and King's College, with significant teaching contributions from King's teaching and research faculty.

  • The student cohort is relatively small (30 students), allowing for a high level of student - staff interaction.

  • You will be taught through a combination of lectures and small group teaching (tutorials, problem solving workshops), laboratory-based practical and project work under the direction of a supervisor. Face-to-face teaching will be complemented and supported with innovative technology.

  • The programme is divided into modules.  You will be required to pass all modules to be awarded a degree from both King's and SUSTech. However, there are modules required by the Chinese educational system which, while they must be passed, will not count towards the award of the King's degree.

  • Before the start of the second academic year, students must achieve an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or above, with no individual component score below 6.0 (or equivalent scores in other English proficiency tests).
