Karl Nightingale

Biomedical Science

The Programme Lead provides academic leadership on the joint Biomedical Science programme.

Karl has a background in biochemistry and pharmacology, with a PhD in molecular pharmacology (characterizing anti-cancer drug interactions with DNA) from the University of Southampton (UK), and periods of post-doctoral research at the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, MD, USA), and at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (Heidelberg, Germany) to study chromatin, epigenetics and the regulation of gene expression. He continued this work, initially as a Wellcome Trust funded private investigator at the University of Cambridge (Dept of Biochemistry), and more recently at the University of Birmingham, where he established a successful research group, leading to grant capture, a number of high impact papers, and a patent that was commercialized.

Karl has worked in teaching and programme management for several years, is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and has published a number of highly cited papers on educational research, particularly in using technology to support student’s learning. This is the focus of his ongoing research.
